KWL Strategy
The KWL Strategy is an effective strategy that can be used to guide reading. It is considered an effective way to "engage students in active text learning" (Vacca, 2008, p.17). A KWL chart, shown below, can be used anywhere from a reading journal, to an informal survey, or the classroom black/white board.
Example
We are about to begin a unit on The Victorian Era. Answer the questions below about what you know, want to know, and later, learn, about The Victorian Era. I've also added a few questions that you might want to ask yourself as you're answering the questions.
